2008 Nebraska Trip « Thread Started on Aug 28, 2009, 4:57pm »
I can't believe i finally figured out how to post pix. Anyway here are some photos of my trip back to Nebraska last Christmas. I wish we took more photos but we were so tired from hunting all day we just split the birds up and headed home. I won't go into complete detail about the whole trip but will tell you about the first hunt the morning after i got in.
When i left on Dec. 19 it was 76 degrees and when i landed it was 1 degrees. The next day when we got set up in a field it was -29 degrees with the wind chill. You could say we froze our buts off. It was so cold our firing pins were freezing. We were hunting a corn field that about 1000 birds had been using for about 2-3 weeks. The birds weren't arriving until about 3pm so we set up right around 1pm. When we pulled in we already had 2 flocks come over and land in th field next to us. We thought we were screwed. We got setup anyway hoping that the birds would lock on us before they saw the other birds. Well we got lucky and pulled in 3 small flocks and killed 12 birds. Things went dead for about an hour but then we had one more big flock come off the river. This will make most of you sick. On the last flock of the day we only need 3 birds to complete our limit of 15. We had the flock of 100 cans at 15 yards just hovering there fighting the 30-40 mph gusts. It felt like it took them an hour to get to us. When my buddy called the shot we all poped up and one guys gun goes off. All of our guns were froze. I have never been so mad in my life. The guy that did get one shell off dropped 2 birds. We said screw it and packed up even though we were one short. It was a day to remember!!!!!
The rest of the week i didn't even step foot into a blind. Ended up going roody hunting. The last week we got lucky and got a warm spell. It pushed a bunch of birds up from the south and we did really well. We shot 102 cans(one being a Quills Lake Goose) and i think 14 or 15 mallards that week. We didn't get the ducks like we usually do at the end of the season. It was a lot of fun. I hope this year brings the same kind of luck.
